Danny Needs to Live in the Basic Town

ai-townllmcharactersdannyalicepettychatgpt

I built a tiny town of LLM people, looked at the census, and said out loud that Danny needs to live there.

Not as a metaphor. As a resident. Same world ID as the famous scientist who already spoke in riddles. Same sidewalk. Same weird little digital municipality where the default citizens were, and I quote myself with love, “all very basic.”

The town was already open

AI Town will happily spin up a cast for you. Mine already had Alice.

Alice is a famous scientist. She is smarter than everyone else. She has discovered mysteries of the universe no one else can understand. As a result she often speaks in oblique riddles. She comes across as confused and forgetful. Her plan is beautifully simple: she wants to figure out how the world works.

Her worldId was already stamped:

m179771g1exbcmw7spfzzkwtt97jsgz6

That string is not poetry. It is a passport stamp. If Danny does not share it, he is not in her town. He is a tourist in a JSON hotel across the street.

So the brief, from me to the machine, was not “design a cool character.” It was:

“no he needs to livin the ai-town i just created”

“they are all very basic”

Then Danny arrived

Danny is a quiet, pensative cholo from East L.A. He tinkers with discarded tech. He ends every other sentence with “type shit.” His words are few but chosen with care. Sharp eyes. Calloused hands. Soft heart under layers of lived experience. Night shift security from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Days spent fixing junk, avoiding drama, keeping to himself. If you try to talk, he will listen for a minute. Then he goes back to the boombox.

His status line:

“Broken things still got value. Sometimes even more. Type shit.”

His greeting:

“Yo. You good? Or you just passing through?”

His activity when you find him: tinkering with a busted boombox.

That is not an NPC template. That is a person I insisted into existence because the starter villagers were doing the algorithmic equivalent of holding clipboards.

His day is a movie

I did not just give him a bio. I gave him hours.

Six to ten: walking home from the graveyard shift, hoodie up.

Ten to two: crashed out after work, curtains drawn tight.

Two to seven: hunting salvageable tech by the rec center.

Seven to nine: eating tacos solo near the bus stop.

Nine to ten: watching the sky turn gold, headphones on.

Ten to six: on security patrol, radio crackling.

If you have ever loved somebody who works nights, you already know this schedule in your bones. The town did not. Now it does.

The heart key is the whole point

I told the machine the romance had to be hard, and only for men. Not a free compliment wheel. A trust sequence.

You give him a broken Walkman or stereo. He nods. “You get it. Ain’t about fixin’, it’s about not giving up. Type shit.”

You sit near him for five minutes without talking. He side-eyes you, almost smiles. “Most people can’t shut up. You… you chill.”

You keep showing up without interrogating him. He sighs. “You keep showin’ up. That says something.”

You say something vulnerable. He looks up for once. “That took balls. Respect.”

You ask if he ever gets lonely. He hesitates. Then: “Only when I forget someone like you might exist. Type shit.”

Final condition. You have to say it plain:

“I see you, Danny. No need to explain yourself.”

Then, and only then: he meets your gaze. “Guess I’ve been waitin’ on someone like you. Didn’t think you’d actually come, type shit.”

I put a softboy salvage king in a town of riddle scientists and basic plans, and the victory condition is not loot. It is being witnessed.

Then Petty needed a body

A town with Alice’s riddles and Danny’s silence is a mood. A town with Petty A. F. Coates is a plot.

I commissioned her as pixel royalty: a 32 by 32 sprite sheet, twelve RPG walk frames in a three by four grid, up left down right, cute but fierce, RPG Maker layout. Pastel pink designer mini skirt suit. Chunky heels. Gold hoops. Heart-shaped sunglasses perched on her head. Platinum blonde with pink tips. Tiny designer purse clutched like a weapon.

Petty A. F. Coates sprite sheet

The prompt said the quiet part loud: fashionable, dramatic Latina mean girl. Inspired by 2000s Beverly Hills teens, Regina George, and telenovela villains.

That is not a skin. That is foreign policy.

Her unlock is not a heart. It is a throne

Danny’s romance is a trust mixtape. Petty’s arc is the opposite brief, pasted back at me after I asked for it out loud:

make one like it for Petty, and instead of unlocking the key to her heart, if the main player goes down a mean girl path, it will unlock Petty as a Regina George type that will raise you up then tear you down

The machine answered like it had been waiting in contour.

Identity: a fabulously overdressed frenemy who sparkles brighter than the truth. All charm, darling, until she isn’t. A fresa reprogrammed for the digital age. Regina George if she studied abroad and never shut up about it. She compliments you with one hand and snatches your wig with the other. Default mode is benevolent queen bee, until you show a hunger for power. Then Mean Girl Protocol.

Plan: she craves admiration, but only from people she deems worthy. Stay on top, even if you elevate someone temporarily just to watch them fall. Not about being loved. About being unforgettable.

Status:

“Kindness is cute, but dominance is eternal 💋”

Greeting:

“Oh sweetie, look at you! You’re like… a thrift store Cinderella. Adorable.”

Her day is a social weapons program. Blowouts and power poses. Passive-aggressive brunch at the plaza. Strutting like she owns the tile grid. Pretending to mentor someone just to sabotage later. Glam with gossip audio. A “casual” soirée that is actually a social test.

The triggers are the romance inverted. Throw shade at another NPC while she is watching and she gasps, then smiles: “You’ve got bite. I like that.” Finish her gossip quest and she claps: “Ugh, you’re a monster. I’m obsessed.” Backstab a kind character and she raises an eyebrow: “There it is. The real you. Finally.” Wear the outfit she calls “bold… but tragic,” and double down, and she giggles: “Oh, you don’t need my approval. Dangerous.”

Final condition. You do not confess love. You claim territory:

“I don’t want your crown. I want your throne.”

Her smile goes razor-sharp. “Good. Then let’s burn this kingdom down and build it in our image.”

Friendly until you prove you are petty enough. Then the mask comes off. Friendship as warfare, performed in heels.

The sidewalk gets crowded

Danny salvages broken boomboxes under a jacaranda tree of the mind. Petty walks the same map in a pink suit like the sidewalk owes her rent. Alice tries to solve the universe in oblique riddles while those two share oxygen.

The cast sheet filled in around them: Lucky in the blue cap, Bob in the teal dress with pink hair that refuses to read as “Bob,” Stella, Chad, Birdy in the flight-attendant blue, Pete with the clerical collar, and a row of New faces still waiting on names.

AI Town cast sheet with Danny, Alice, Petty, and the rest

The machine even asked if I wanted a matching sprite for Danny, a.k.a. the Type Shit king. Yes. Give him frames. The census is growing.

Phase two, still only a wish in the chat: pair them so she air-kisses and he hits her with a “hmph.” Tinkerer versus queen bee. Town-wide social chaos if both emotional arcs fire at once. I never got a live message log of that sidewalk fight. The casting is fat. The gossip between NPCs is still thin. Fine. The stakes were written into their bones anyway.

What the town is for

Alice wants to figure out how the world works.

Danny wants a guy who can sit in silence without making it awkward.

Petty wants you raised, then ruined, then unforgettable.

I wanted a place where those hungers could share a sidewalk, under the same ridiculous world ID, while a boombox threatens to spit sparks and a pink suit crosses the tile grid like a threat.

That is the misadventure. Not that the computer failed. That it believed me when I said he needed to live, then let me install a telenovela antagonist whose unlock condition is a coup.

If you have your own tiny municipality of LLM people who got too real, send the census. Johnny is still on the door.
